Shepherd woke up around 1:30am crying with his hands over his eyes saying "my eyes, my eyes". We could hear him through the baby monitor so Chad got up and went to check on him and he asked him if his eyes hurt and Shepherd said "no". Chad asked him if he'd had a nightmare and he said "yes" so Chad laid down with him till he went back to sleep. A few hours later, Shepherd woke up again, and again and again. We finally brought him in to bed with us and around 5am, Shepherd woke up and did the same thing...he put his hands over his eyes and said "my eyes, my eyes". At this point, I leapt out of bed and threw the lights on - thinking to myself,...why in the world have we not turned the lights on yet and looked at his face?!?!?!? Sure enough, his eyes were literally glued shut with all the gook - his eyelids were swollen and he had dark circles under his eyes. Oh man - we felt SOOOOOOOO bad!!! As soon as we could, we were out the door this morning trying to get him in to a doctors office, but guess what happened?! - yet again, we discovered that you need to be either healthy for your first visit, or you need to have an appointment.

This experience this morning brought back a lot of ugly memories of last year in Savannah when nobody would see Shepherd. I actually called Chad very upset after being turned away for the 3rd time and he ended up taking off work. I think he believed I was being too nice and that a receptionist wouldn't turn away a man - ecspecially if he was persistent. Much to his surprise, the 4th practice we went to turned us away. Chad had actually walked in with Shepherd and told me to stay outside for a minute. By the time I walked in, he was so frustrated. There was an empty waiting room, and the receptionist (although very nice) was being persistent that the doctor was booked till next week. How frustrating to have insurance, and cash in hand to pay in full - but still be told that despite the fact that there is an empty waiting room, the doctor still cannot see your sick child till next week! The receptionist at this office was at least compassionate enough to refer us to a walk-in clinic that wound up being wonderful!!! It is a clinic that is affiliated with Disney - they had the best facility I have ever seen and all of the nurses and doctors were so nice and kind to the kids!!! They even filled our prescriptions there which was a huge help since I would have had to go to Walgreens or Wal-Mart...which of course would mean I would've had to lug the kids around even more! The doctor diagnosed Shepherd with bacterial Pink Eye which was brought on by a sinus infection. He wrote a prescription of eye drops that would be enough to treat Rauly if hers got much worse. We've never had Pink Eye before, but from what I've been told, we will most likely be indoors and away from all socialization for the next 10 days...ugh!!! Say a prayer for my sanity, Shepherd's quick recovery and that Rauly's won't get any worse. I hate to see any child sick, much less my own...what a helpless feeling!!

Oh, I hate pinkeye! I've had it before, and it's miserable....but I've never had it in both eyes!! It's unbelievably contagious--even using the same towel or washcloth could pass it on. Hope both the kids get to feeling better soon....

Poor baby! That is so frustrating. Justin and Jace have both had it before. I didn't realize it would take 10 days to clear up! That's crazy! I truly feel for you! Give him lots of tlc! Love, Shauri

Oh, it just breaks my heart to see children so miserable and feel so helpless. We will pray that his eyes will heal very soon, and pray for your sanity...bring on the play dough, paints, & colors!!

Oh boy, can I ever relate! We are over it now and I am so glad! Shelby only had to take her drops for 4 days; I took mine for a little longer. Be so careful, because it is very contagious! You probably already know that though! We used a lot of hand sanitizer last week! We're praying for Shepherd and the rest of you too.

Deidre - Chad and I were both laughing because you know how computers spread electronic viruses?,...well just the other day I read about you and Shelby having pink eye and then 2 days later Shepherd woke up with it. Chad was like...ok, you need to stay off the computer till this virus clears up - we don't want to spread it to anyone else. (We're dorks, I know...)

Update:
Rauly now has it full fledge in her right eye...I was up with her last night wiping her eye with warm washcloths and putting drops in her eyes...Shep has responded to the eye drops very quickly and no longer has any gook (non-technical term!). He is also bouncing off the walls again which tells me he's feeling pretty good. Luckily he likes medicine so he'll take it whether he feels bad or not!

The upside to all of this is I now have a clean house from ceiling to floor - everything is santized, washed, lysoled, scrubbed, and antibacterial soap is being used in overload!! :)

I used to take kids from camp to the ER all the time for conjunctivitis (pink-eye)... you made me remember those good times :) Hope the kids get better fast!
